United States Champion Kalisto def. Ryback (Kickoff Match)
CHICAGO — At WWE Payback Kickoff, Kalisto proved his WrestleMania 32 victory over Ryback wasn’t a fluke when he defeated The Big Guy in a rematch to retain the United States Championship on “the first pay-per-view of a New Era.”
Despite a tough couple of weeks since The Show of Shows, including a non-title loss to Ryback on SmackDown, Kalisto’s speed and agility were too much for The Human Wrecking Ball, who was undefeated since WrestleMania.
Just when it appeared Ryback had the advantage due to his size and strength, Kalisto countered with his quickness and agility. After The King of Flight escaped a spinebuster, Ryback hit his much smaller competitor with a devastating gorilla press off the middle rope. But The Big Guy decided against covering Kalisto at that moment; instead, he went to the top turnbuckle and missed a big splash. The error in judgment gave Kalisto the opportunity to drop Ryback with Salida del Sol for the victory.
With his second successful United States Title defense, Kalisto’s size, skill and determination should not be underestimated by The Big Guy, or any other challengers.
