Austin Aries def. WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville by Disqualification
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Austin Aries defeated WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville via disqualification when the titleholder shoved the official, but The King of the Cruiserweights retained the title since it cannot change hands on a disqualification.
WWE Payback marked an opportunity at redemption for Aries after he came close to dethroning Neville at WrestleMania 33. Faced with a championship rematch, the challenger did not tremble under the pressure. Aries quickly took control, utilizing mat technique to take Neville off his game.
While Neville stood in the corner showing his frustration, Aries boldly put his feet on the top rope as though he was sitting on a hammock. Neville flipped the script, though, when he stymied Aries’ attempt at an aerial attack by dropkicking him off the top turnbuckle.
Neville’s arrogance nearly cost him when he took a moment to celebrate on the ropes, giving Aries the opening to kick him to the ringside floor. The challenger seemingly had the title around his waist after connecting with a sunset flip into a powerbomb off the top rope before fluidly transitioning into a Last Chancery submission. Seeing his reign as The King of the Cruiserweights fading, Neville resorted to shoving the referee, resulting in a disqualification.
Aries’ hand was raised in victory, but Neville still left with his crown intact.
