Carlito def. Sandman
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Few gave Carlito a chance going into his match with Sandman at The Great American Bash. After all, he was going to attempt to beat the longtime ECW Original-turned-Raw Superstar in his own game, a Singapore Cane on a Pole Match. And Sandman had made a career out of using his trademark cane to take foes to the extreme in these battles. Just ask the legendary Terry Funk, Mick Foley and ECW's Tommy Dreamer how brutal Sandman could be with a Singapore cane in his hands.
But to the chagrin of Sandman -- and his fans, who love to rise to their feet whenever he walks through the crowd to the arena -- Carlito stumbled out of the HP Pavilion with a smile on his face. Sandman had managed to retrieve the Singapore cane from a pole, but Carlito did not let him use it on him. Sandman swung, Carlito ducked and stunned the former construction worker with his patented Backstabber, leaving him helpless and prone to the one-two-three.
Carlito pumped his fists in ectasy, shouting, "That's right! That's how we do!" as he slinked up the ramp. Sandman could only look on as our fans in San Jose were stunned into silence. But Carlito wasn't surprised at all.
"I knew I was going to win the whole time, no matter what he brought," the second-generation Superstar said, munching his apple while holding a bag of ice to his head. "Carlito always comes out on top. … You take that stupid stick away from him and he has nothing."
Carlito said he knew Sandman thought he was heavily favored in the match. Primping his Sideshow Bob Afro with a hairpick, the cocky star said he lured the working man's champion into a false sense of security.
"Today, I guess Sandman thought he had an advantage," Carlito sneered. "But me being smarter than him -- because he is an idiot -- I knew what he was going for and I came out with the win."
But don't be fooled. Sandman kept Carlito off-balance and retreating with his unorthodox repertoire for much of their battle. While aggression and a no-holds barred approach is the norm for Sandman -- and has won him a loyal following -- for so many years, Carlito's intensity and smarts proved to be the deciding factor in this battle.
Carlito had the last laugh on this night. However, will Sandman continue to give him sleepless nights?
