Matt Hardy def. Cruiserweight Champion Gregory Helms (Non-Title Match)
In what was perhaps the most intensely contested and hardest-fought brawl of their lengthy rivalry, Matt Hardy was victorious over Cruiserweight Champion Gregory Helms in a no-title match at No Mercy.
It was a red-hot crowd at the RBC Center as fellow tar-heels, former friends and bitter rivals Hardy and Helms put it all on the line on Sunday night. Earlier in the day, Gregory Helms told WWE.com that he "wasn't concerned with pleasing his hometown fans," and the raucous crowd was more than happy to reciprocate that feeling as they enthusiastically booed the Cruiserweight Champion. Hardy, on the other hand, was welcomed as a hometown hero as the crowd overwhelmingly approved of his every move.
The match was nothing short of a barnburner as the two pulled out one fast-paced, high-risk move after another. Hardy took control early, but Helms showed the resiliency that has made him the longest reigning Cruiserweight Champion in WWE history.
Helms hit not one but two of his signature Shining Wizards on Hardy, but it wasn't enough. Matt lived up to his "I will not die" motto as he reversed a third Shining Wizard attempt into a Twist of Fate for the victory.
After the match, Hardy wanted to thank the hometown crowd.
"Tonight, I proved that I am truly North Carolina's finest," said the exhausted victor. "But, I couldn't have done it alone. Tonight, I had an arena full of people in my corner, and without them, this wouldn't be possible. We are a team, and we did it together."
