DALLAS -- United States Champion Matt Hardy withstood a formidable offense from challenger Chavo Guerrero to retain his title.
Throughout the bout, Chavo keyed in on Hardy's left knee, delivering punishing attacks and submission moves. Bam Neely even went after the champion's knee when the ref was distracted. But each time, Hardy fought through the pain and found a way to continue. In the end, it was a Twist of Fate from Hardy that put an end to Chavo's hopes of bringing the gold to "The Family."
Hardy's performance at Night of Champions comes as no surprise to some. Ever since returning from injury to defeat Montel Vontavious Porter at Backlash 2008 to claim the title, Hardy has taken on all comers with a renewed vigor that has firmly established himself as a valiant champion.
In the end, Hardy's tenacity was too much for the self-proclaimed "Mexican Warrior," even with influential aunt -- SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero -- behind him.
