Kofi Kingston def. Chris Jericho (New Intercontinental Champion)

Kofi Kingston def. Chris Jericho (New Intercontinental Champion)

DALLAS -- In a surprising turn of events, Kofi Kingston challenged and defeated Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship at Night of Champions even before partaking in his first match on Raw as a Superstar of that brand. (PHOTOS)

Prior to Night of Champions, a night where every WWE title must be defended, Y2J had no set challenger for his title, despite Jericho saying that most people were expecting him to defend against Shawn Michaels. Due to his recent eye injury, which HBK sustained in an altercation with Y2J, there was no way The Showstopper could compete at the pay-per-view.

While in the ring condemning the fans for cheering on Shawn Michaels despite his actions in recent weeks, Jericho was cut off by the sound of Kofi Kingston's entrance music blaring through the arena. The Jamaican Superstar, who was sent to Raw in Wednesday's Supplemental Draft, would be the one challenging Jericho for the Intercontinental gold.

After an impressive show against an in-ring veteran, it seemed Kofi's luck had run out with Y2J having him locked in the Walls of Jericho in the center of the ring. Much to the surprise of everyone, Shawn Michaels came through the audience and laid out Lance Cade at ringside with Sweet Chin Music. HBK then distracted Jericho just long enough for Kofi to regain his composure and pick up the win to become the new Intercontinental Champion.

After the match, as officials were tending to Michaels and attempting to help him to the back, Jericho exacted his revenge for costing him the gold. He slammed HBK with a hard right punch to Michaels' injured eye, leaving him writhing in pain on the entrance ramp.
