Drake Maverick def. Leon Ruff
It has been a whirlwind year for Drake Maverick, who enjoyed one of the most epic of Cinderella runs in WWE history during NXT’s recent eight-man tournament to crown a new NXT Cruiserweight Champion. Despite losing his first bout in that tourney, Maverick made it all the way to the finals before being edged by new champion Santos Escobar.
After signing a new contract with WWE, the former 205 Live General Manager returned to his old stomping grounds for a collision with Leon Ruff, a high-flying relative newcomer to the purple brand.
Ruff staggered his opponent in the early goings with a vicious elbow to the bridge of Maverick’s nose, but being on the receiving end of the blow seemed to light a fire under the former 24/7 Champion. In succession, Maverick overwhelmed Ruff with a bulldog, a senton, a sunset flip that launched Ruff into the bottom turnbuckle and a picture-perfect elbow from the top rope to claim the win.
After the bout, Maverick looked straight into the camera and vowed to become the next NXT Cruiserweight Champion.
Oney Lorcan, Danny Burch & Mansoor def. Ever-Rise & Tehuti Miles
Mansoor, who notched a pair of wins over Tehuti Miles in recent weeks, looked primed to renew acquaintances with his rival at the opening bell, but Miles immediately tagged out.
Both sides used frequent tags early in the bout, but a well-timed distraction by Ever-Rise allowed Miles to level Oney Lorcan with a dropkick and put his team in control.
With Lorcan isolated, Chase Parker and Matt Martel continued to inflict pain with some rapid-fire tandem maneuvers. Lorcan eventually fought through the pain to make a clutch tag to Danny Burch, who hit the ring like a ball of fire, tattooing both members of Ever-Rise with a dropkick and folding Miles like an accordion with a German Suplex.
With all six Superstars brawling in and out of the ring, Mansoor nailed Miles with the Search and Destroy Neckbreaker. When Mansoor attempted the move for a second time, however, Miles quickly reversed into a backslide, but Mansoor wiggled free and rolled up his rival for the 1-2-3.
