Randy Orton vs. Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship

Chris Benoit defeated Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania XX to achieve an 18-year dream of becoming World Champion. Benoit went on to beat both men again the following month in a rematch. Chris Benoit was indeed 4-real. Randy Orton, meanwhile, also seemed on a roll. He was one of the brightest young stars in WWE and was riding high in Evolution. He won a Battle Royal on RAW to become the No. 1 Contender and earn himself a title shot at SummerSlam. With two Superstars on such a roll, something had to give.

Orton tried to match up with Benoit in chain wrestling as well as a test of strength, but Benoit came out on top of both exchanges, leaving the youngster frustrated. Orton was able to hook in the Sharpshooter, but Benoit got out of it and went for the Crossface. Orton wriggled out of it, though, sliding underneath the ropes and sending Benoit shoulder-first into the steel post in the process. Orton continued to work over the champion's shoulder, further weakening the limb that is so vital in locking in the Crossface.

Benoit came back with a  flurry of suplexes, and then tried to roll through an Orton bodypress. Orton held on though, and got a two-count. Orton thought he had the match won, and while he was calling for an RKO, Benoit came back with a Sharpshooter. Orton made it to the ropes, but Benoit would later come back with the Crossface. Orton again escaped, and Benoit went to work with some more suplexes. And then, from out of nowhere, Orton was somehow able to hit the RKO to become the youngest World Champion in WWE history.

JBL w/ Orlando Jordan vs. Undertaker for the WWE Championship

JBL defeated Eddie Guerrero in a brutal Bull Rope Match at the Great American Bash to win the WWE Championship. SummerSlam marked his first pay-per-view defense of the championship, and he had the unenviable task of defending it against Undertaker.

JBL did everything he could to gain an early advantage. He even went to the top rope in uncharacteristic fashion and hit a flying shoulder block. JBL decided to try and attack Undertaker's legs, and while Orlando Jordan had the referee distracted, JBL hammered away at the Deadman's leg with a chair. JBL went back to the top rope as the match went on, but Undertaker countered with a Superplex. He then went for the Last Ride, but he couldn't complete the move due to the injured leg. With the referee knocked out, JBL took the WWE Championship belt and nailed Undertaker. Jordan revived the referee, but Undertaker kicked out at two. Undertaker then got his hands on the WWE Championship belt, and blasted the champion with it in plain view of the ref causing a disqualification. Enraged at the outcome of the match, Undertaker continued to pummel JBL and chokeslammed him through the roof of his own limo.
