An errant chair strike by guest referee Shawn Michaels decided the outcome of a hard-fought main event between Bret “Hit Man” Hart and WWE Champion The Undertaker at SummerSlam 1997, which took place inside the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. Aside from that controversial finale, the event was marked by a devastating development that ended up serving as a turning point in a WWE Hall of Fame career, as  “Stone Cold” Steve Austin broke his neck in Intercontinental Title-clinching victory against Owen Hart. Elsewhere, Triple H and Mankind demolished each other in a brutal steel cage opener.
