SmackDown Five-Point Preview: Aug. 17, 2012
What will come of Del Rio's "conversation" with Booker T?
Moments after Alberto Del Rio ambushed World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus last Friday — with the help of hired guns dressed as police officers — irate SmackDown General Manager Booker T took away his World Title Match at SummerSlam. ( WATCH EXCLUSIVE) In response, Del Rio Touted on Monday that he will be taking this up with Sheamus tonight.
What will happen when the still relatively new General Manager comes face to face with a removed No. 1 contender, who carries with him a reputation for ruthless behavior? Could the frustration cause Del Rio to overstep his bounds with the leader of SmackDown, thereby bringing further punishment upon himself? Or could The Mexican Aristocrat have something up his sleeve that will make Booker rethink his initial judgment?
In any event, perhaps the encounter will help to answer the looming question of whether there will be a replacement World Heavyweight Title Match this Sunday at SummerSlam. And if one does take place, just who will be challenging The Great White?
Will Bryan be able to say “No!” to his issues to repel The Viper’s strike?
Tonight, Daniel Bryan will go one-on-one with Randy Orton in what is sure to be an intense battle from start to finish. Both fierce competitors are at the top of their game — carrying with them a technically sound, aggressive style — and have a history with anger management issues.
While it is possible that Bryan might be distracted by his upcoming match against The Big Red Monster Kane at SummerSlam ( MATCH PREVIEW) — as well as his ongoing issues with Raw General Manager AJ Lee — he will need to put his full focus on WWE’s Apex Predator or he simply won’t make it to Sunday.
Will two masks help save face?
For the first time ever on SmackDown, Rey Mysterio will join forces with Sin Cara in a tag tea match against the dangerous combination of Cody Rhodes and Intercontinental Champion The Miz.
While the exciting prospect of teaming the two luchadores together promises to create a high-octane match, one cannot ignore what a risk it presents as well — once the nature of their opponents is factored into the equation. Cody Rhodes demonstrated last week that he is very interested in unmasking Sin Cara at any cost. ( WATCH) With two masked Superstars in the ring at the same time, it could only serve to fuel his recent obsession — especially considering his past rivalry with The Ultimate Underdog.
And with Miz putting his Intercontinental Title on the line against The Master of the 619 this Sunday at SummerSlam ( MATCH PREVIEW), look for The Awesome One to try anything for a decisive edge on the final show before the pay-per-view.
Who will be the new assistant to the SmackDown General Manager?
Last Friday, Booker T decided that whoever wins the match between Eve and Kaitlyn during tonight’s show will become the assistant to the GM.
While two-time former Divas Champion Eve is certainly a fierce competitor and has a great deal of experience in the position she is fighting for, Kaitlyn carries the more immediate advantage of momentum. Four days ago on Raw, the former bodybuilder pinned Beth Phoenix, allowing her and Divas Champion Layla to walk away with a tag team victory over Eve and The Glamazon. ( WATCH) However, whether she can parlay that win into an even bigger one and earn a place in the Booker Administration remains to be seen.
Will Antonio Cesaro translate to winner in the Broski language?
As a result of winning consecutive non-title matches against United States Champion Santino Marella in recent weeks on SmackDown, Antonio Cesaro will get an opportunity at the U.S. Title in a special SummerSlam Pre-Show match this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET/ 4:30 p.m. PT. ( MATCH PREVIEW)
But, one week ago, the smug Swiss Superstar fell to former World Heavyweight Champion Christian. Will he be able to rebound against Zack Ryder tonight and gain valuable momentum on the road to his first chance at WWE championship gold? Or could Long Island Iced-Z make Cesaro’s upcoming SummerSlam experience a rough ride?
