Five things to watch: World Heavyweight Champion Gunther vs. Jey Uso at WrestleMania

Veteran NFL writer and Pat McAfee Show contributor Mark Kaboly subjectively lists his top five things to watch for the WrestleMania 41 match between World Heavyweight Champion Gunther and Jey Uso.

THE SETUP
Even if you tried hard … maybe squinted with immense intensity … possibly made some exceptions along the way to manipulate the truth … and try to convince yourself with all your might …you probably couldn't come up with two more polar opposite Superstars than Jey Uso and Gunther. Gunther is a black trunks, no-nonsense, technically sound wrestler who has enjoyed nothing but success and long title reigns since joining WWE. Meanwhile, Uso has been professionally attached at the hip to his brother Jimmy Uso for nearly two decades and has often been labeled as a tag team guy (a future Hall of Famer in the division) who never has been able to break through on the singles scene. When the "Main Eventer" did break through on his own and have a title put around his waist, it was the Intercontinental Championship that only lasted 28 days. Uce’s detractors point at the explosion of YeetMania being the reason why. The "Yeet Movement" has full arenas (as well as Michael Cole) on their feet “Yeeting” to kick off shows routinely for what seemed like months, and this propelled him to a thrilling win at the Royal Rumble. In what could very well be the most unlikely of WrestleMania title matches when Gunther and Jey Uso will meet with the Heavyweight Championship on the line.

Five things to watch for at WrestleMania:

1

NOW IT IS PERSONAL: The stakes were raised this week with the brutal beatdown of Jimmy Uso on Monday Night Raw on Netflix, with Jey forced to watch feet away while being tied to the ropes. Jey never beating Gunther in three tries and routinely getting beaten down by him framed the matchup heavily in Gunther’s favor. That may have taken a turn on Monday, less than three weeks from WrestleMania. The way that Gunther embarrassed and physically harmed Jimmy Uso might just flip a switch on Jey Uso from more than the "Yeet guy" to a man who is being forced to reach deep down inside him to restore the honor of his family name. Even though Gunther still has the upper hand and was the one who administered the embarrassment to "Big Jim," it will give Jey the opportunity to even the playing field leading up to The Show of Shows and into the match.

CAN THERE BE A WINNER? Well, of course there’s going to be a winner, but what long-term effects will it have for whoever loses? That’s one of the low-key big picture points of the match between Gunther and Jey Uso. What happens to the loser? Gunther is one of the top talents in the company and is on the verge of being mentioned with the elites of CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, John Cena, and other greats. With the way his career has been going, Gunther should demolish Uso, then continue to climb the ladder to stardom. But what if he doesn’t? If Gunther loses, it destroys the momentum and The Ring General persona that he has meticulously built up over back-to-back WrestleMania losses to underdogs. If Gunther wins, then is that the end of the "Yeet" Movement as we know it?

3

KEEP AN EYE ON JIMMY: Jimmy Uso has inserted himself into the rivalry with the "Slap Heard Around the World” a few weeks back (in all seriousness, if there was a harder slap to the face in the history of the WWE, please point it out). Jimmy paid the price for that slap on Raw this past week in a big way, but could he end up tipping the scales in his brother's favor? How that will materialize can take a couple of different paths. Jimmy could help his brother win the title, then beat down Gunther after, or Jimmy could turn on his brother because of jealousy of how Jey has a title opportunity and he doesn’t. If I were to make a guess, he’s going to have a say in the outcome of his brother’s match.

4

MIND GAMES: Jey Uso slipping on a critical Spear moment against Gunther, after a couple of missteps against Austin Theory before that, definitely added to the doubt in the mind of the challenger heading into the biggest match of his career. It matters, and it mattered to Jey. Talking on "Raw Recap" with Sam Roberts and Megan Morant, Uso admitted that the pressure has been getting to him. Even though Jey has been in countless matches, he’s never had this opportunity at WrestleMania. The pressure could get real and could be overwhelming. It’s almost like having the yips in golf or a slump in baseball; it can play with your mind and consume you.

5

A HOLY (BLANK) MOMENT? It’s WrestleMania, so anything can and usually does happen. If there is any match that might see a holy (blank) moment, it might be Gunther vs. Jey Uso. Does that mean a huge moment off the top of something for Uso or betrayal by Jimmy Uso or the return of Sami Zayn as the honorary Uce, then that would make perfect sense. To make it WrestleMania worthy, how about harkening back to October, where a seed was planted by Gunther concerning Goldberg during a show in Goldberg’s hometown of Atlanta. Goldberg went on the record later saying that he has promised a retirement match at some point. What better time to set that up than WrestleMania? This likely won’t happen, but it sure would distract everybody from Gunther losing to Jey, that’s for sure.

THE PREDICTION: I'm predicting a distraction by Jimmy Uso that helps Jey win the title and have Las Vegas shaking with the euphoria of a championship "Yeet" experience. Gunther will be able to absorb a loss and continue on his march toward the top of the company.
