John Cena vs. JBL: WrestleMania 21

John Cena competes for his first WWE Championship.

When John Cena debuted on SmackDown in June 2002, no one could have predicted he’d go on to become one of WWE’s biggest Superstars. As he worked to make a name for himself, he nearly won the 2005 Royal Rumble Match, narrowly missing out on a WWE Championship bout at WrestleMania 21. However, he later rebounded and won a SmackDown No. 1 Contender Tournament, earning the opportunity to face WWE Champion JBL.

As WrestleMania 21 went Hollywood at the STAPLES Center, Cena won his first WWE Championship from the double-tough Longhorn Loudmouth JBL with an Attitude Adjustment. It was an epic beginning to a storybook career, whose final chapter has yet to be written.

Coming into the 2006 Royal Rumble Match, WWE Champion Edge proclaimed that he would not be a transitional champion. However, for The Rated-R Superstar, his 15 minutes of fame lasted exactly three weeks, and John Cena was the one who walked out of the Royal Rumble Match as WWE Champion.

Cena regained the title he lost to Edge just three weeks earlier. The Ultimate Opportunist had cashed in the first-ever Money In The Bank contract at New Year's Revolution, just moments after an exhausted Cena had just retained the title within the Elimination Chamber.

With Elimination Chamber experience on his side, John Cena captured the WWE Title within the steel structure after outlasting former champion Sheamus, Triple H, Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston and Ted DiBiase. However, the victory in St. Louis' Scottrade Center represented the shortest title reign in Cena's history, as Batista had been granted an impromptu match moments later, and took the championship from Cena's prone, unconscious body.

John Cena was one competitor from victory at 2005's Royal Rumble — but Batista upended him. Cena was one second from basking in glory at SummerSlam 2008 — but Batista refused to quit. Cena prevailed over five others to capture the WWE Title at Elimination Chamber 2010 — but Batista came and fought it away.

During some of the most pivotal moments of his career, Cena failed to overcome the force of just one man: Batista. Until WrestleMania XXVI.

After an intense clash between two of WWE's preeminent powerhouses on The Grandest Stage of Them All, Cena finally unleashed all manner of fury on The Animal to capture his seventh WWE Title and once again proclaim, "The Champ … is … here!"

After the match, CM Punk shocked the WWE Universe when — after having departed the company two weeks earlier — he surfaced inside the arena carrying his WWE Title.
