World Heavyweight Champion Edge def. Jeff Hardy
CHICAGO -- Just like at Royal Rumble, Jeff Hardy was betrayed by his own flesh and blood, helping The Ultimate Opportunist and World Heavyweight Champion Edge to abscond with a win. (PHOTOS)
After a valiant effort from Hardy, it looked as though he might be on track to dethrone the champion. But, Jeff's brother Matt changed the course of fate when -- with his arm in a heavy cast -- he smashed not only his brother's head, but also his dreams in one fell swoop with a cheap shot from behind. After the attack, Hardy was easy prey for The Ultimate Opportunist to finish off with an Edgecution from the top rope.
Ever since Royal Rumble, Jeff has been burdened by the ugly betrayal from his own brother. (PHOTOS) But at Backlash, Jeff finally got revenge on Matt by winning their emotion-charged "I Quit" Match. (PHOTOS)
If Matt had not interfered tonight, who knows if Jeff would be walking into the land of SmackDown as the new World Heavyweight Champion.
One thing is for certain, though. If there's an opportunity, Edge will seize it. The nine-time World Champion continues to prove he is at the top of his game. But, for how long?
The hungry Hardy has already shown he is not going to stop until he regains the title that was taken from him. And, Chris Jericho has been complaining for weeks on SmackDown that he is not getting the respect he deserves.
The Rated-R Superstar will have to remain diligent to protect his title. With the powerful SmackDown roster, he's going to need eyes in the back of his head. Don't miss the next edition of SmackDown at 8/7 CT on MyNetworkTV to find out who steps up and challenges the champion.
